Ron Miller is employed by Urology Chambers Limited.  His medico-legal practice is supported by a medico-legal coordinator, nurse advisor, research assistant and two secretaries.

Mr Miller was Head of Department at the Whittington Hospital for 25 years with honorary positions at the Institute of Urology, UCH and Royal Free Hospital.  He is fully validated (GMC) in full time private practice.

Mr Miller has an international reputation in urology.  Research has been the foundation of his clinical practice.  With over 147 published papers, 250 abstracts, 2 text books, 27 chapters and over 270 international presentations, he is able to demonstrate his in-depth knowledge of urological conditions and their management.   This has been recognised by a Hunterian Professorship (RCS), Invited Harveian Lecture, the Cutler’s Prize (RCS), and Alexander Simpson-Smith Lecture, as well as prizes from both the French and German Urology Association.   In addition, he has supervised and funded eight post-graduate degrees.

Mr Miller has an extensive medico-legal practice spanning thirty years at consultant level. He is a BAUS approved expert witness fully validated on the UK Register of Expert Witnesses. He is also a member of the Academy of Experts.  He accepts over 100 new cases a year, divided into 20% defendant, 70% claimant and 10% single joint expert. These cases are either negligence or major injury cases. He attends court in England and Ireland 4 to 5 times per year.

To ensure a high standard of report writing Mr Miller has attended six courses on preparation of medical legal reports and a course on court presentations, as well as participating in many meetings on medico-legal issues. He has received national awards for excellence 2017-2020.

He has also lectured on preparation of medico-legal reports and legal issues (RSM, Holyrood Urological Society and French Urological Update Course, BMA, MPS, BAUS, LCA, Patient Safety Association as well as invited hospital talks and Aspen Group). He has participated in the Inner Temple Further Education Day for Barristers (advocacy training for Barristers) and is the Medico-Legal Advisor to the London Clinic MDT.  He has also lectured at the Gough Square Clinical and Legal Update Seminar.

Leading claimant and defence litigators in England and Ireland have regularly instructed Mr Miller over the last 30 years. Area of Expertise

Based on thirty years’ clinical experience Mr Miller can report on a wide range of general urology.  He has special interest in the areas detailed below on which he routinely reports on a medico-legal basis.

Renal Stones

Mr Miller has been a supra-regional urological specialist for both open and endoscopic renal (kidney) surgery for many years, with a particular interest in stone disease. He has an international reputation in this area.

Gynaecological Injury Urinary Tract

As lead urological clinician for a busy obs and gynae unit Mr Miller has extensive experience of the correction and management of major surgical complications following gynaecological surgery (perforated bladder, fistulae, ureteric damage, bladder distention).

Cauda Equina – Management of Neuro-Urology

For twenty five years Mr Miller was responsible for the urological management of the complications associated with the spinal unit and neurological department at the Whittington NHS Trust.   He has wide experience in the diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of cauda equina syndromes.

Fractured Pelvis – Urological Consequences

Mr Miller is routinely instructed by specialist motor cycle injury lawyers, as he has a proven record in the clinical and medico-legal diagnosis and treatment of erectile dysfunction and urethral injuries associated with fracture pelvis.

Scrotogenital Day Surgery

Mr Miller received the prize of the German Urology Association for his work on urological day surgery.  As such he is familiar with all aspects of scroto-genital surgery including circumcision, vasectomy, testicular torsion, hydrocoele and epididymal cysts.  He has experience of the catastrophic complications of Fournier’s Gangrene.

Malignant Disease Kidney and Bladder

Mr Miller is a member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons, Uro-oncology Section.  He has held the post of Chairman of the North London Cancer Network Urology Committee, responsible for the governance and outcome of all tumour surgery in the region. He has vast experience of both renal and bladder cancer surgery having worked in the Regional Cancer Centre.

Prostate Conditions

Mr Miller has performed several thousand trans urethral resections (TURP) for benign prostate disease and is completely conversant with the operation and its possible complications.

Pain Syndromes

Over the past ten years, Mr Miller has developed an interest in urological pain syndromes (painful bladder syndrome, urethral syndrome, prostatitis, pelvic pain of a urological origin, chronic testicular pain).  He regularly undertakes a number of novel treatments (including specialist nerve blocks) for these difficult conditions.

Exposure of Bladder Carcinogens

Mr Miller has experience of cases involving industrial exposure to known urothelial carcinogens and has reported on causation, condition and prognosis in a number of cases both for the claimants and defendants.  These cases have involved exposure to oils in an industrial environment and exposure in the rubber and tyre industry.  Mr Miller’s evidence must be considered together with an environmental health and safety expert who is required to determine the length and level of exposure.

Terms and Conditions

Medico-Legal Terms and Conditions as of 1st October 2018:

We can organise most urological tests in London should these be required.  This includes all radiological investigations, urodynamics, blood and urine tests.  Quotations are available on request

Most cases can be completed within 10-14 weeks from receipt of complete well organised documentation (hard copy required).

The receipt and acceptance of medico-legal instructions and/or records will be regarded as acceptance and agreement to pay the fee schedule described above by the instructing solicitor or agent.

Fees are not reductable by taxation and form an agreement between ourselves and the instructing solicitors. Legal and third party companies may have their own terms and conditions.  Acceptance of instructions by Urology Chambers Limited supersedes any such local agreements.

Any investigations will be invoiced separately by the hospital/clinic and payment will be the responsibility of the instructing solicitor. Any instructions received via a third party (legal agencies) will ultimately remain the fiscal responsibility of the referring solicitors in the event of non-payment. The production of any reports, explanations, answers to questions or other communications relating to a claim will also remain the fiscal responsibility of the referring solicitor.

The intellectual property of any report produced by Urology Chambers Limited is the property of Urology Chambers Limited. It is only on the receipt of full settlement of outstanding accounts that the Urology Chambers releases the intellectual property (report, documented opinions and correspondence) enabling any third party to use part or all of that material.

Invoices must be paid with 28 days of receipt (unless deferred payment has been agreed by Urology Chambers Limited).  Interest (currently 8% plus the Bank of England base rate) and debt recovery cost (20% +VAT) will be charged for late payment.

Indication of Possible Costs

This is an indication of cost for a medico-legal case based on two lever arch files (each file containing no more than 300 pages single side print of A4 paper).  Records should be in hard copy records, well organised and ideally paginated.

We have endeavoured to cover all aspects of the medico-legal instruction however this is an indication of possible costs not a quote.  A full quote can be provided once we have had sight of the notes bundle and are aware of the specific case details.

Any work not included in this indication of possible costs will be charged at £290 per hour.  VAT will be charged on all fees quoted. 7% administration fee will be added to all invoices.

Meet the Team

Linda Morrell – Medico-Legal Co-coordinator RGN, Post Grad. Dip., MSc in Health Service Management.

Linda qualified as a nurse in 1987.  She was Surgical Nurse Manage at The Whittington NHS Trust before being appointed as Directorate Manager for Urology and Nephrology at University College Hospital where she was responsible for the operational management of this busy tertiary referral centre which included the Institute of Urology.  Her role encompassed the investigation and reporting of complaints.  She joined Urology Chambers Limited in 2012. Her extensive experience of dealing with litigation cases ensures the smooth running of our service.

Debbie Vandepeer – Clinical Practice Manager

Debbie has worked with Mr Miller for 25 years.  She originally joined the medical secretariat at the Whittington Hospital, progressing to run Woolaston House Private Medical Chambers, coordinating Mr Miller’s clinical practice.  She works closely with Linda to provide clients with outpatient appointments and investigations.  Debbie heads up a very experienced team of secretaries including Kate, Siama, Emma and Barbara.

Karen Gordon – Urology SpR

Karen is an experienced Urology SpR who is planning a career as a Urological Expert Witness once she has attained a consultant post.  She is gaining work experience with Mr Miller and is involved in the preparation of medical reports.

Georgina Miller – Part time Clerical Assistant

Georgina has been working at Urology Chambers since 2016.  She helps with general office duties and preparation of legal files.  She is anticipating a career in law after completing her university studies.

Nisha Patel – Accounts

Nisha jointed the Urology Chambers team in 2012.  She is responsible for accounts and book keeping.  She liaises with Linda regarding all aspects of invoicing and debt recovery.

26th January 2019 - Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth, London - Men's Health

Mr Miller participated in the Men's Health Seminar for GP giving a lecture on the management of the prostate in General Practice.  Over one hundred GPs from the area attended the meeting along with several of Mr Millers urological colleagues from the hospital.  Mr Miller had the opportunity to discuss the latest andrology treatments with the newly appointed Consultant Andrologist Ms Philippa Sangster.

19-20th September 2018 - Markree Castle, Collooney, Co. Sligo - Pathways to Progress’, Legal Conference, hosted by Callan Tansey

Mr Miller's presentation on "The urological and legal implications of spinal cord and cauda equina injuries affecting the bladder" was well received, resulting in lively debate.  Callan Tansey organised a fantastic meeting this year.  It was a wonderful opportunity for Mr Miller to meet his medical and legal colleague to discuss the problems experienced by patient suffering from Caudia Equina Syndrome.

23rd January 2018 - The team from Urology Chambers Limited attended the IDF Data Protection Training

Mr Miller and his team attended this excellent event.  We were able to discuss the requirements for GDPR and how to keep our data secure.  We will be working through the guidelines to ensure that we are compliant by May 2018.

22nd November 2017 – Mr Miller was involved in the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth’s Prostate Cancer Awareness Initiative as part of the Movember campaign.

8th November 2017 Dublin – Mr Miller participated in the seminar on “Out for Justice – Cauda Equina Syndrome Litigation.”  Mr Miller addressed the question "can a urologist add value to a cauda equina case?"

Doireann O’Mahony Barrister organised a informative day.  She was joined on the panel by Mr Miller, Donald Campbell, Stephen Murphy and Jean O’Sullivan. All proceeds from the day have been donated to Spinal Injuries Ireland.  Mr Miller gave a lecture on the urological implications of CES. 7th & 8th September 2018 - Mr Miller attended the Callan Tansey Conference - "Pathway to Progress" hosted at Markee Castle Sligo

The conference was aimed at creating collaboration between stakeholders; clinicians, hospital managers, families, legal professionals and State Agencies to enable all parties to work together to resolve and minimise the impact of medical negligence.

25th – 26th April 2017 - Legal Case Dublin

Mr Miller travelled to the Republic of Ireland and gave expert evidence over two days in The Four Courts Dublin (Browne~v~Aut Even Hospital).

10th March 2017 - BMA Medical Legal Conference London Mr Miller presented on Medical Manslaughter.

Mr Miller was invited to present at this meeting as he was responsible for the evidence which convicted and imprisoned the first urologist on such charges. He has also been involved as an expert witness in the defence of urologist potentially liable for such charges on behalf of The Defence Unions. This lecture involved a lively debate and many questions from the audience who were keen to hear about the impact of medical manslaughter legislation, wilful neglect and corporate manslaughter and the effect it will have on defensive medicine.

7-8th March 2017- Mr Miller attended the World Congress in Minimally Invasive Surgery and gave the key note address on Renal Stone Treatment Past Present and Future.

This was not only an opportunity to meet colleagues from all over the world but also to highlight the latest developments and potential future innovations in stone management.

4th March 2017 – Birthday Celebrations

Georgina Miller (Part-time Clerical Assistant) celebrated her 18th Birthday and one year working at Urology Chambers Limited.

4th February 2017 - Mr Miller presented at GP National Symposium – Female Urinary Conditions in General Practice.

Mr Miller scored an average of 4.8 out of 5 in all feedback categories. This is a great opportunity to deal with this important subject which is often misunderstood by GPs and patients.

23rd January 2017 - Mr Miller presented at GP Seminar – Cauda Equina Syndrome and The Role of the GP.

Mr Miller received excellent feedback from participants. He between 4.8 and 4.9 out of 5 in all audited aspects of his presentation. Mr Miller continues his keen interest in communicating with GP colleagues and assisting them with urological and legal problems.

Based on thirty years’ clinical experience Mr Miller can report on a wide range of general urology.  He has special interest in the areas detailed below on which he routinely reports on a medico-legal basis.

Renal Stones

Mr Miller has been a supra-regional urological specialist for both open and endoscopic renal (kidney) surgery for many years, with a particular interest in stone disease. He has an international reputation in this area.

Gynaecological Injury Urinary Tract

As lead urological clinician for a busy obs and gynae unit Mr Miller has extensive experience of the correction and management of major surgical complications following gynaecological surgery (perforated bladder, fistulae, ureteric damage, bladder distention).

Cauda Equina – Management of Neuro-Urology

For twenty five years Mr Miller was responsible for the urological management of the complications associated with the spinal unit and neurological department at the Whittington NHS Trust.   He has wide experience in the diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of cauda equina syndromes.

Fractured Pelvis – Urological Consequences

Mr Miller is routinely instructed by specialist motor cycle injury lawyers, as he has a proven record in the clinical and medico-legal diagnosis and treatment of erectile dysfunction and urethral injuries associated with fracture pelvis.

Scrotogenital Day Surgery

Mr Miller received the prize of the German Urology Association for his work on urological day surgery.  As such he is familiar with all aspects of scroto-genital surgery including circumcision, vasectomy, testicular torsion, hydrocoele and epididymal cysts.  He has experience of the catastrophic complications of Fournier’s Gangrene.

Malignant Disease Kidney and Bladder

Mr Miller is a member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons, Uro-oncology Section.  He has held the post of Chairman of the North London Cancer Network Urology Committee, responsible for the governance and outcome of all tumour surgery in the region. He has vast experience of both renal and bladder cancer surgery having worked in the Regional Cancer Centre.

Prostate Conditions

Mr Miller has performed several thousand trans urethral resections (TURP) for benign prostate disease and is completely conversant with the operation and its possible complications.

Pain Syndromes

Over the past ten years, Mr Miller has developed an interest in urological pain syndromes (painful bladder syndrome, urethral syndrome, prostatitis, pelvic pain of a urological origin, chronic testicular pain).  He regularly undertakes a number of novel treatments (including specialist nerve blocks) for these difficult conditions.

Exposure of Bladder Carcinogens

Mr Miller has experience of cases involving industrial exposure to known urothelial carcinogens and has reported on causation, condition and prognosis in a number of cases both for the claimants and defendants.  These cases have involved exposure to oils in an industrial environment and exposure in the rubber and tyre industry.  Mr Miller’s evidence must be considered together with an environmental health and safety expert who is required to determine the length and level of exposure.

Terms and Conditions

Medico-Legal Terms and Conditions as of 1st October 2018:

We can organise most urological tests in London should these be required.  This includes all radiological investigations, urodynamics, blood and urine tests.  Quotations are available on request

Most cases can be completed within 10-14 weeks from receipt of complete well organised documentation (hard copy required).

The receipt and acceptance of medico-legal instructions and/or records will be regarded as acceptance and agreement to pay the fee schedule described above by the instructing solicitor or agent.

Fees are not reductable by taxation and form an agreement between ourselves and the instructing solicitors. Legal and third party companies may have their own terms and conditions.  Acceptance of instructions by Urology Chambers Limited supersedes any such local agreements.

Any investigations will be invoiced separately by the hospital/clinic and payment will be the responsibility of the instructing solicitor. Any instructions received via a third party (legal agencies) will ultimately remain the fiscal responsibility of the referring solicitors in the event of non-payment. The production of any reports, explanations, answers to questions or other communications relating to a claim will also remain the fiscal responsibility of the referring solicitor.

The intellectual property of any report produced by Urology Chambers Limited is the property of Urology Chambers Limited. It is only on the receipt of full settlement of outstanding accounts that the Urology Chambers releases the intellectual property (report, documented opinions and correspondence) enabling any third party to use part or all of that material.

Invoices must be paid with 28 days of receipt (unless deferred payment has been agreed by Urology Chambers Limited).  Interest (currently 8% plus the Bank of England base rate) and debt recovery cost (20% +VAT) will be charged for late payment.

Indication of Possible Costs

This is an indication of cost for a medico-legal case based on two lever arch files (each file containing no more than 300 pages single side print of A4 paper).  Records should be in hard copy records, well organised and ideally paginated.

We have endeavoured to cover all aspects of the medico-legal instruction however this is an indication of possible costs not a quote.  A full quote can be provided once we have had sight of the notes bundle and are aware of the specific case details.

Any work not included in this indication of possible costs will be charged at £290 per hour.  VAT will be charged on all fees quoted. 7% administration fee will be added to all invoices.

Meet the Team

Linda Morrell – Medico-Legal Co-coordinator RGN, Post Grad. Dip., MSc in Health Service Management.

Linda qualified as a nurse in 1987.  She was Surgical Nurse Manage at The Whittington NHS Trust before being appointed as Directorate Manager for Urology and Nephrology at University College Hospital where she was responsible for the operational management of this busy tertiary referral centre which included the Institute of Urology.  Her role encompassed the investigation and reporting of complaints.  She joined Urology Chambers Limited in 2012. Her extensive experience of dealing with litigation cases ensures the smooth running of our service.

Debbie Vandepeer – Clinical Practice Manager

Debbie has worked with Mr Miller for 25 years.  She originally joined the medical secretariat at the Whittington Hospital, progressing to run Woolaston House Private Medical Chambers, coordinating Mr Miller’s clinical practice.  She works closely with Linda to provide clients with outpatient appointments and investigations.  Debbie heads up a very experienced team of secretaries including Kate, Siama, Emma and Barbara.

Karen Gordon – Urology SpR

Karen is an experienced Urology SpR who is planning a career as a Urological Expert Witness once she has attained a consultant post.  She is gaining work experience with Mr Miller and is involved in the preparation of medical reports.

Georgina Miller – Part time Clerical Assistant

Georgina has been working at Urology Chambers since 2016.  She helps with general office duties and preparation of legal files.  She is anticipating a career in law after completing her university studies.

Nisha Patel – Accounts

Nisha jointed the Urology Chambers team in 2012.  She is responsible for accounts and book keeping.  She liaises with Linda regarding all aspects of invoicing and debt recovery.

26th January 2019 - Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth, London - Men's Health

Mr Miller participated in the Men's Health Seminar for GP giving a lecture on the management of the prostate in General Practice.  Over one hundred GPs from the area attended the meeting along with several of Mr Millers urological colleagues from the hospital.  Mr Miller had the opportunity to discuss the latest andrology treatments with the newly appointed Consultant Andrologist Ms Philippa Sangster.

1st October 2018 - Updated Urology Chambers Limited Terms and Conditions.

19-20th September 2018 - Markree Castle, Collooney, Co. Sligo - Pathways to Progress’, Legal Conference, hosted by Callan Tansey

Mr Miller's presentation on "The urological and legal implications of spinal cord and cauda equina injuries affecting the bladder" was well received, resulting in lively debate.  Callan Tansey organised a fantastic meeting this year.  It was a wonderful opportunity for Mr Miller to meet his medical and legal colleague to discuss the problems experienced by patient suffering from Caudia Equina Syndrome.

7th March 2018 - Urology Chambers Received the coveted Global Excellence Award 2018  

The team at Urology Chambers attended the Savoy to receive their award "Most Highly Regarded Expert Witness 2018 Urological Surgery - the fabulous trophy is now on display at our offices.

10th February 2018 - GP Symposium Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth

Mr Miller had an opportunity to meet many of the local GP.  He received very positive feedback from his presentation "Dealing with urological symptoms and cystitis in General Practice.

23rd January 2018 - The team from Urology Chambers Limited attended the IDF Data Protection Training

Mr Miller and his team attended this excellent event.  We were able to discuss the requirements for GDPR and how to keep our data secure.  We will be working through the guidelines to ensure that we are compliant by May 2018.

22nd November 2017 – Mr Miller was involved in the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth’s Prostate Cancer Awareness Initiative as part of the Movember campaign.

8th November 2017 Dublin – Mr Miller participated in the seminar on “Out for Justice – Cauda Equina Syndrome Litigation.”  Mr Miller addressed the question "can a urologist add value to a cauda equina case?"

Doireann O’Mahony Barrister organised a informative day.  She was joined on the panel by Mr Miller, Donald Campbell, Stephen Murphy and Jean O’Sullivan. All proceeds from the day have been donated to Spinal Injuries Ireland.  Mr Miller gave a lecture on the urological implications of CES. 7th & 8th September 2018 - Mr Miller attended the Callan Tansey Conference - "Pathway to Progress" hosted at Markee Castle Sligo

The conference was aimed at creating collaboration between stakeholders; clinicians, hospital managers, families, legal professionals and State Agencies to enable all parties to work together to resolve and minimise the impact of medical negligence.

25th – 26th April 2017 - Legal Case Dublin

Mr Miller travelled to the Republic of Ireland and gave expert evidence over two days in The Four Courts Dublin (Browne~v~Aut Even Hospital).

10th March 2017 - BMA Medical Legal Conference London Mr Miller presented on Medical Manslaughter.

Mr Miller was invited to present at this meeting as he was responsible for the evidence which convicted and imprisoned the first urologist on such charges. He has also been involved as an expert witness in the defence of urologist potentially liable for such charges on behalf of The Defence Unions. This lecture involved a lively debate and many questions from the audience who were keen to hear about the impact of medical manslaughter legislation, wilful neglect and corporate manslaughter and the effect it will have on defensive medicine.

7-8th March 2017- Mr Miller attended the World Congress in Minimally Invasive Surgery and gave the key note address on Renal Stone Treatment Past Present and Future.

This was not only an opportunity to meet colleagues from all over the world but also to highlight the latest developments and potential future innovations in stone management.

4th March 2017 – Birthday Celebrations

Georgina Miller (Part-time Clerical Assistant) celebrated her 18th Birthday and one year working at Urology Chambers Limited.

4th February 2017 - Mr Miller presented at GP National Symposium – Female Urinary Conditions in General Practice.

Mr Miller scored an average of 4.8 out of 5 in all feedback categories. This is a great opportunity to deal with this important subject which is often misunderstood by GPs and patients.

23rd January 2017 - Mr Miller presented at GP Seminar – Cauda Equina Syndrome and The Role of the GP.

Mr Miller received excellent feedback from participants. He between 4.8 and 4.9 out of 5 in all audited aspects of his presentation. Mr Miller continues his keen interest in communicating with GP colleagues and assisting them with urological and legal problems.

5th January 2017 – Urology Chambers Limited celebrated its 5th Anniversary at The Ritz.

We all raised a glass of champagne and will be looking forward to another successful year.
